about
Sophie Vanhomwegen (b. 1988, Belgium) is a Brussels-based artist who works across analogue and digital mediums. Sourcing material directly from modern advertising and magazines, she cuts into polished images of commercial glamour, reassembling them into surreal collages and mixed-media works. Often working in series, her work thrives in the subtle tension between attraction and unease, using playful visual metaphors to question where our desires actually come from.
While her practice has long been rooted in two-dimensional work, her recent output expands into three dimensions. By stepping into installation and playing with the physical boundaries of the frame, she brings these spatial tensions out of the image plane and directly into the viewer's physical space.
Alongside her visual practice, she founded in 2021 Espace Vanhomwegen, an artist-run space in Brussels designed as a meeting place for multidisciplinary exhibitions and events, promoting artistic exhange within the emerging Belgian art scene. She frequently collaborates with musicians and peer artists. Additionally, she also works with MUS-E Belgium to engage diverse audiences and keep her artistic practice rooted in society.
This online portfolio presents ongoing series of collages on paper, mixed media works, and a selection of collaborative projects.
